How to Resize an Image Without Losing Quality
Understand downscaling, upscaling, aspect ratio, and export quality.
Downscaling can preserve excellent visible quality when you keep the aspect ratio and export once from the best source. Upscaling is different: it creates more pixels but cannot recover detail that was never captured.
Start with the destination
Find the actual required dimensions. A card displayed at 800 × 450 pixels rarely benefits from a 4000 × 2250 source, although a high-density display may justify roughly twice the displayed dimensions.
- Begin with the original, not a thumbnail downloaded from a social network.
- Lock the aspect ratio before changing width or height.
- Reduce to the largest size the destination really needs.
- Export once, then inspect text, faces, and high-contrast edges.
Avoid distortion
An image that starts at 1600 × 900 has a 16:9 ratio. Setting it to 800 × 450 preserves the ratio; 800 × 600 stretches it. If the destination has a different shape, cropping is usually better than stretching.
Quality and sharpening
Photographs generally tolerate moderate JPEG or WebP compression after resizing. Screenshots with small text need higher quality or a lossless format. Some professional editors offer output sharpening, but excessive sharpening creates halos. A browser resizer favors a clean, predictable high-quality resample rather than inventing detail.
